Territories for mapcodes

Below is a table of territories and their standard abbreviations. Most codes are based on the ISO 3166 standards. Short country codes are unique. Short state codes are not always unique.

For example, the short state code "AL" can mean the state of Alabama in the USA or the state Alagoas in Brazil. In international databases, it is therefore recommended to use the full code (such as "US-AL"), which is always unique.

Code standards

  • ISO 3166 - International Standard for country codes and codes for their subdivisions, issued by the International Organization for Standardization

  • PRC GB/T 2260 - Chinese national standards issued by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), the Chinese National Committee of the ISO and IEC.

  • Mapcode - Standard codes issued by the Mapcode Foundation.

  • Mapcode legacy - Standard codes issued in the years 2002-2012 by the Mapcode Foundation, now usually superseded by ISO 3166 codes.
