Mapcode Demo

Enter coordinates, an address, or a mapcode to look up its location.

How to use the demo

The map above turns any location into a mapcode and back again. Search, click or use your position, then read the result in the bar directly under the search field.

  1. Search for a place

    Type in the search field and press Enter or click Search. You can enter an address or place name, decimal coordinates such as 52.3702, 4.8952, coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds, or a mapcode such as NLD 49.4V. The map jumps to the location and its mapcode appears in the result bar.

  2. Click anywhere on the map

    Click a spot on the map to move the marker there. The result bar immediately shows the mapcode for that spot. Zoom and pan the map as usual to find the place first.

  3. Use your current location

    Click the arrow button next to Search to jump to where you are. Your browser asks for permission to share your location.

  4. Choose a territory

    A location often has mapcodes in several territories, for example a state and its country. The buttons in the result bar list them, with the local territory first. Intl is the international code that works anywhere without a territory. Click a button to switch.

  5. Pick an alternative code

    When a territory has more than one mapcode for the same spot, a small arrow appears next to the code. Click it to see the alternatives and pick the one you prefer. The shortest code is shown by default.

  6. Set the precision

    The precision menu switches between about 7 m (standard), 1.4 m and 25 cm. Higher precision adds a short suffix after a hyphen, for example 49.4V-K2.

  7. Change the alphabet

    The alphabet menu shows the same mapcode in another script, such as Greek, Cyrillic or Arabic. A mapcode stays valid in every alphabet.

  8. Copy the mapcode

    Click Copy mapcode to put the selected code on your clipboard, ready to paste into a message or document.

Good to know

  • Mapcodes are not case-sensitive: nld 49.4v is the same as NLD 49.4V.
  • You can separate the territory with a space or a hyphen: NLD 49.4V and NLD-49.4V both work.
  • The result bar shows the coordinates of the marker in decimal degrees. You can paste them back into the search field.
  • If a Google button appears in the corner of the map, you can switch between TomTom and Google maps. The marker and search result stay in place.
